The Potential Link Between Women's Makeup Cancer And Mesothelioma

Health and beauty experts are working together to educate young women about the dangers of using makeup that contains talc

Monday, June 19, 2023 - If you have used talcum powder regularly for many years as part of a daily regimen for feminine hygiene you may be worried that you have developed ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer is an insidious disease whose symptoms are masked by the monthly discomfort a woman experiences. Most ovarian cancers are not diagnosed until stage 4 when the disease has spread through the blood to other organs making treatment more difficult. Also, diagnosing ovarian cancer is nearly impossible because there is no specific medical test for it. About 45,000 women have filed talcum powder cancer lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson and the company has had to pay billions of dollars to ovarian cancer victims over the last five years. In addition to talcum powder cancer, repeatedly inhaling talcum powder that becomes airborne during application can cause mesothelioma, a rare and deadly cancer of the delicate lining of the lungs that must freely expand and contract to facilitate normal breathing. Mesothelioma is the signature respiratory disease from inhaling asbestos, a carcinogen that is recognized by scientific experts to contaminate talc. Talc, the main ingredient in talcum powder, is mined adjacent, interspersed, and overlapping with deposits of asbestos. Once blasted into the air during mining it is impossible to separate the asbestos from the talc. Even if it is rare for asbestos to contaminate talc, using the product is equivalent to playing Russian Roulette with one's health since as little as one particle of asbestos can cause mesothelioma. Young women should be particularly careful not to use cosmetic products that contain talc as they may be exposing themselves to ingesting asbestos each time they put on makeup, which for most is every day, several times per day.

Health and beauty experts are working together to educate young women about the dangers of using makeup that contains talc and to recommend alternatives that may be healthier. One of those alternatives is to not wear makeup at all. TheList.com recently wrote an educational piece titled, " Why You Should Consider Avoiding Skincare Products Containing Talc" which touches on the dangers of using talc-based cosmetics and offers alternatives for young women. Experts wrote that young women should be careful to examine the ingredients in their blushes, powders, and finishers to ensure that they do not include talc. " Several companies have begun including "talc-free" on their labels to give buyers peace of mind. One example of this is the Laura Mercier Ultra-Blur Talc-Free Translucent Loose Setting Powder," according to The List. Women concerned with the safety of their beauty products should consult a dermatologist who could provide guidance as to the safest alternatives to the makeup products they are using currently. If you are experiencing breathing problems you may have developed talc poisoning from inhaling dust during the application of makeup. Talc poisoning could lead to asbestosis or mesothelioma if the source of talc inhalation is not discontinued.
